Does yoga start alone, at home, good or bad idea?

Study lessons or program to make at home using videos? Hesitates? I give you my advice as a coach on the best way to start yoga.

Yoga begins alone: my opinion as a coach

Personally I started yoga alone about 10 years ago, when I finalized my training as a sports coach. At the time I started watching Yoga DVDs. Several coaches had boasted the merits. Because in 2007 there were still not many studies in Paris, and I didn’t want to go to the house without having had my experience before. And unlike many, I have not started yoga with the aim of losing weight, also we can ask ourselves the question, does yoga make you lose weight? But this is another topic 😉.

Is it a good idea to start the practice of yoga, alone at home?

I find that it is a good idea because it allows you to appropriate the foundations, feel the first postures, without being afraid of the judgment or fear of making mistakes. Because often when you land in a yoga study, practitioners already have a good level. And tends to put yourself uncomfortable. So, starting from your living room, using videos for beginners, you can “break”, replace yourself, start again … you can also redo the same introductory video in the sun. History to make you “hand” on this sequence. I think it’s the best way to gently start the practice of yoga, without pressure.

Another positive point for me is that you can easily test different types of yoga. There are dozens of variants: Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, Bikram Yoga, Yin Yoga … So, by testing several lessons, you will be able to see if you like it or not and it will help you define what type of yoga it is done for you!

Make yoga at any time at home

Yoga alone at home to start gently

As a mother, I find it very practical to be able to do my yoga at home without a teacher. I can do it on Sunday morning, at home, with my children playing later, while my husband went to do mountain bikes. No organization, it is not necessary to take the car to reach the study in the city next to it. He exercises me when I want, when I want. And I often have a session at 10:30 pm as well !! 30 minutes before going to bed !! And this … is impossible in a yoga study! So, if you have eccentric programs, you are often on the move or you have an intense program that prevents you from going at 18:00, exercising at home is an excellent option!

Yoga begins alone to not compare yourself

Another important resource: the fact of not comparing you! Yoga is the opposite of the performance. But when you are at the bottom of a room, with 35 people in front who are all super comfortable with the series offered by the teacher, it is very difficult to maintain confidence in yourself, do not compare yourself and practice non -judgment … especially when you start yoga.

Personally, I appreciate the practice at home alone, because they are much more in contact with my feelings, my breath. Being in a well -known and silent environment helps me to concentrate a lot.

A cheaper practice

We will not lie, yoga lessons in the studio often cost dear (between 10 and 30 € depending on the cities). If you want to practice several times a week, quickly makes a good budget … so the great advantage of doing it at home is that it costs almost nothing! Apart from the purchase of a carpet and a block, and perhaps a yoga program to start safely, and that’s it! You can practice the frequency you want and in the right place for you! Even on weekends, even on vacation, even on the go!

Doing yoga in the studio avoids boredom

Subsequently, if you want, I am strongly encouraging you to go to practice from time to time in theaters or in yoga studios. Because each teacher has his approach and there are always new interesting inspirations to take. This allows you to vary the rhythms and postures, so as not to get bored and find other ideas to do good.

Avoid boredom by practicing yoga

Most Yoga teachers will correct you during the course, so you can be even more comfortable in a posture, in order to breathe even more freely. This will allow you to progress faster.

Another interesting aspect is only when we practice in a group, we also motivate between us. We can make friends, knowledge, we expand his group of “sporty” friends. And this is also very nice! And then in the studies there are super mirrors, or more space than in a small stay in order to have more freedom to practice vertical, candles, crows …

So in the end … the two types of practice are complementary! Alone in his living room in the comfort of his home. And from time to time in the studio or in a small private group with a teacher who comes to visit you in a company or friends. The important thing in my opinion: it is pleasure in practice. So if the study or atmosphere of a collective lesson do not adapt to you, stay at home with your videos or take a particular teacher! And if on the contrary you have to see elsewhere and renew yourself: take some lessons here and there in various rooms.

And why not a yoga retirement during your holiday? Try several teachers. It allows you to vary your practice, to get closer to yoga differently: more or less spiritual, more or less dynamic, more or less focused on breathing … as I always say: there are as many ways to make yoga as there are teachers on this earth !!
